Sergeant Man

Sergeant Man lies to the north of what many take to be the main Langdale Pikes. There is no great difficulty in getting to the summit of Sergeant Man. In fact, there is something of an anti-climax when you reach the summit. Looking north-west from the summit shows the hump (there is no other word in my opinion) of High Raise. To the south is the great slab of rock that is Pavey Ark. South-east is the the view down Blea Rigg towards Lake Windermere.

The summit of Sergeant Man is the rather insignificant pimple almost central in the image, to the right of Eagle Crag . The edge of Stickle Tarn is just visible to the left of Pavey Ark

The routes up to Sergeant Man are principally the routes from below Pavey Ark by Stickle Tarn. This is a busy area, particularly in fair weather and weekends in the main summer months. Although there is, what appears to be a little used approach route along Blea Rigg from the Grasmere end. Certainly, on the occasions that I have used this route, there have never been many folk about.

Once at this point, you are in a position to explore all around the area of High Raise, Pike of Stickle, Thunacarr Knot, Harrison Stickle and Pavey Ark summit. The hard work in ascending the height is done. The remainder is a fairly straightforward stroll around.

Keep an eye on the weather. I recently got caught out in a downpour on Sergeant Man that demonstrated to me that water proof clothing is not always as waterproof as it should be when the wind is blasting at gale force.
