In 1999, after years of ignorant bliss, I bought a computer, ostensibly to encourage and further my childrens education. Far from being used by my offspring for its intended purpose, it suffered the arrogance of their disdain. I, on the other hand, could not ignore it. It represented a challenge.
Taking up the gauntlet I sallied forth. First to the local Technical College where I completed a course in computer basics using the wordprocessor, spreadsheets etc. Then a City and Guilds course in programming in QBASIC. But where to go from there?
I examined various options. I was not greatly impressed by many of the commercial organisations. They appear expensive and not all qualifications are recognised. I settled on the Open University mainly for the structured approach to learning, but also for the respect that employers tend to award to its students.
