Dimensional Analysis
Dimensional Analysis
Decision makers have said that any system should have the following characteristics:
- Summarized information that can provide further detail
- Analysis of summaried information across departments/regions.
- Ability to dissect information whichever way is chosen.
- Information to be displayed in graphic or tabular form.
- Able to view information 'over time'.
In dimensional analysis a subject area has to be identified. Within the subject area will be the columns of data that represent the facts. From this subject area, dimensions of analysis can be constructed. Time is always one of the dimensions of analysis. There are no limits to the number of dimensions of analysis.
Star Schema
The subject area is the centre of the star containing few columns but many rows - hence the long thin shape. The star schema is the most commonly used representation of dimensional models.
